S.M. Stubbs

Take This

Take this rope and loop it over
that beam. Let it hang to remind us
we always have options. Take the creek,
take the path from the highway, take
the unrelenting green expanse around us.
Take a sip. Take a hit. Take five.
Take care to know which way the wind
blows. Take hold of my hair, my hand,
take me to the moon and bring me back
for breakfast. Take a penny. Take
your shot. Take it on the chin. Take this
medicine to change your life. Blast me
with your hot takes and heartbreaks,
your buttermilk pancakes. Take care
of your teeth, their erosion tells the world
how you lived. Take advantage
of the moment in the moment. Take
photos, take notes, take a look
in the mirror. This is the only time
what is happening happens.
Take yourself out of the equation,
everything’s about to change.
